So ... what's in it for me?
FITNESS & ATHLETIC ABILITIES ...
Tot's activities centre on the ABCs of movement - Agility, Balance and Coordination - through warm-up games, movement activities, kicking and basic forms (Poomsae).
Children's classes include specific warm-up activities geared to warm up the big muscles and get the heart pumping. For much of the class, the Taekwondo activities also improve overall aerobic and anaerobic fitness as well as agility, strength, speed and power. Poomsae practice enhances coordination, focus and balance.
Adult's classes are two hours. During the first hour, we concentrate on developing sparring skills, which, coincidentally, improves physical conditioning. The warm-up generally includes aerobic drills, dynamic stretching, agility drills and other movement/coordination drills. Sparring specific drills follow, often with kicking targets and sometimes with sparring equipment. Those who do not wish to participate in contact drills do the same exercises using targets and shields, or we adapt the drills to enable athletes to participate with no contact whatsoever. In the latter part of the class, we include other Taekwondo pillars of self-defence, board breaking and/or Poomsae. This training enhances coordination and balance, develops quick and accurate responses to threats, develops situational awareness along with the benefits of knowing how to defend one-self in a threat situation.
EASY PROGRESS MONITORING ... Taekwondo involves skills and techniques to be mastered, with some latitude for personal style and self expression. It develops a set of core techniques, which the Taekwondo student can master and also emphasize those most natural to and effective for each individual.

SELF ESTEEM AND PERSONAL CONFIDENCE ... As you begin to learn techniques and skills, you can't help but feel accomplished ... and there is nothing so empowering as breaking that first board! Knowing you can take care of yourself, knowing your children know how to protect themselves, creates freedom and confidence.

STRESS REDUCTION ... Taekwondo reduces tension and anxiety by providing a socially acceptable means of physical expression while controlling aggression yet venting hostility and frustration in a healthy, beneficial manner. Successful acceptance from others demands self respect, self control and the respect for the training partner or adversary.

SELF-DEFENCE SKILLS ... Taekwondo incorporates a self-defence style which teaches calmness, avoidance and neutralization. It stresses a non-confrontational and controlled approach to aggression. Violence-as-a-last-resort response to conflict is the base to which the rest of self-defence is built.

GOAL SETTING SKILLS ... Taekwondo encourages participants to set objectives of personal achievement and advancement through testing and progression through its belt levels. Dedication to attaining a goal and successful goal attainment improves self image and self esteem.
