ADVANCED START AND FUNDAMENTALS PROGRAMME (children age 9 & under) ... Our programme is designed with more belts between White Belt and Green Belt in order to be able to acknowledge the smaller steps that younger children take. After reaching their Green-Stripe Belt, the children usually are ready to continue within the constructs of the regular programme. Just click on the belts below to find the requirements for each belt.
White Belt (10th Geup)   Purple Belt (10th Geup)

REGULAR COLOUR BELT PROGRAMME ... Like most Martial Arts, Taekwondo uses belts to identify Taekwondo rank. There are 10 levels of colour belts though which students must progress to prepare for their black belt evaluation. The different colour belt ranks are called Geups. Colour belts come in as many different varieties as there are suppliers. These differences often are most noticeable in the stripe belts. Sometimes there is an embroidered stripe around one or both ends of the belt, sometimes the stripe is fabric and runs in the middle of the entire length of the belt and sometimes, the stripe is a strip of tape around one or both ends of the belt.
White Belt (10th Geup)   Yellow-Stripe Belt (9th Geup)
Yellow Belt (8th Geup)   Green-Stripe Belt (7th Geup)
Green Belt (6th Geup)   Blue-Stripe Belt (5th Geup)
Blue Belt (4th Geup)   Red-Stripe Belt (3rd Geup)

COLOUR BELT GRADING 2010 ... Belt testing during the school year will be conducted in the 3rd week (approximately) of October, December, February, April and June. During the summer session, belt testing will occur during the last week of classes. Finally, belt testing will be conducted on the last day of week-long camps.

Athletes who feel (or whose parents feel) they are ready for promotion to the next belt should confirm their readiness with Master Armour, after which they should complete a Belt Testing Application Form and deliver it to Master Armour along with payment.

Effective September 2010, colour belt testing fees will be:
$40 Yellow-Stripe and Yellow Belt Tests
$50 Green-Stripe and Green Belt Tests
$60 Blue-Stripe and Blue Belt Tests
$75 Red-Stripe and Red Belt Tests
$90 Black-Stripe Belt Test

BLACK BELT PROGRAMME ... There is no difference in the design or colour of black belts due to different black belt ranks (Dans), although there are many different designs of black belts depending on the belt manufacturer. The wearer may customize his or her belt to show their rank with embroidered stripes; others prefer to leave their belt unadorned; and both are acceptable. The highest Dan that may be earned is the 9th Dan. The president of the World Taekwondo Federation wears an honourary 10th Dan while he is in office.
BLACK BELT GRADING ... Horizons will conduct Dan testing twice annually - in November and in May. Effective September 2010, all Dan holders will be expected to test at each grading. There is one interim test between 1st Dan and 2nd Dan, three between 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan, etc. In addition to the interim testing, Dan holders will complete a final Dan test.
The purpose for the interim testing is to ensure Dan candidates maintain the skills and knowledge they demonstrated to earn their current rank. In addition, the cost of the athlete's next Dan test will be spread across all of the interim tests, reducing the financial impact of the final Dan test.
CF BLACK BELT GRADING ... CF members will be graded through the Canadian Forces Taekwondo Association (CFTA). Unfortunately, we are not able to spread the expense of the grading fees over the wait period between Dans.
